What is your favorite part of being a job coach/ employment support staff?

My favorite part of being a job coach is watching individuals grow and gain confidence as well as independence. I like to think of being a job coach as being a vessel or a toolbox for individuals to help them progress. The people I serve require compassion, attention, and positive intervention. However, these services may look different from person to person because of the holistic, person-centered approach I provide. I like learning how each person responds the best in order to most effectively actualize their potential.  

How did you end up in this type of job?

I majored in sociology and psychology, and I have always been interested in the interaction between an individual and society. I believe that in the right environment with the appropriate support, anyone can thrive. I knew I wanted a job where I could channel my empathy, education, and energy into helping others, and being a job coach allows me to do that.

What makes someone a good job coach /employment support staff?

Strong interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence, intuition, patience, and being observant are all important skills to have.

What kind of training do you need to do this type of work?

People from a variety of backgrounds can become job coaches. Since the population we work with is diverse, it is beneficial that the job coaches also come from diverse backgrounds and experiences!
